Biography:

I'm a full-time research geologist at the Kentucky Geological Survey and an adjunct professor in the Dept. of Earth and Environmental Sciences. At KGS my duties include research on geologic carbon storage (sequestration), basin analyses, coal geology, stratigraphy, sedimentology, and paleontology. I am especially interested in tidal and coastal sedimentology as it applies to Carboniferous strata in the Appalachian and Illinois basins. Eastern Kentucky has some of the best Carboniferous, coal-bearing outcrops in the world and they provide a wonderful dataset for testing facies and sequence models at a variety of scales. I have been fortunate to conduct research on modern hypertidal estuarine systems in several countries, which share many similarities with tidal facies in the Carboniferous of eastern Kentucky. I am also assembling a paleontological database of Kentucky fossils. As an adjunct professor in the Department of Geological Sciences, I teach GLY 130 (Dinosaurs and Disasters) and co-teach GLY 715 (Coal Geology). I enjoy working with students in the department and am always happy to help with any questions on Kentucky geology.
